About Upper Allen, Pennsylvania
Upper Allen Township in Cumberland County recorded a population of 23,183 in 2020. Shepherdstown, Grantham, Bowmansdale, Fisher Park, and Mount Allen are among its named places. The township's early history reflects milling along Yellow Breeches Creek, lime burning, and cherry growing.
- Township DividedAllen Township was formed in 1766 and divided into Upper Allen and Lower Allen in 1850.
- Creekside BoundaryYellow Breeches Creek marks Upper Allen's southern edge, with York County across the water.
- Bowmansdale MillNear present-day Bowmansdale, the Quigley family established a mill that became known as Quigley's mill.
- Kilns at WorkAt times, as many as fifty lime kilns operated in Upper Allen, a history recalled by the name Limekiln Acres.
- Cherry Fair FarmA farm with more than 200 cherry trees hosted seasonal cherry fairs, and its owner earned more from cherries than grain.
