About Utopia, Texas

Utopia is a community of 225 people in Uvalde County. Its post office first sat at an older settlement called Waresville. In 1884 a survey for a new town named Montana was filed with the county, and the post office moved there. Residents then learned that another Texas town already used the name Montana, so they picked Utopia instead.

The old name lives on in the cemetery, which is still named for Waresville. In 1952 Utopia marked a hundred years since Ware's arrival with a centennial celebration, and Governor Allan Shivers spoke to 3,000 people gathered in the park.

  • A colony that never cameAfter the La Réunion colony in Dallas failed, Victor Prosper Considerant bought 47000 acres in Sabinal Canyon, hoping to start another utopian socialist settlement there. His plan fell through, and the settlement was never built.
  • A Baptist church in 1886Andrew Jackson Sowell and his wife, Mary Lillian, joined ten other charter members to found the Utopia Missionary Baptist Church in 1886, two years after the town was surveyed.
  • Lost Maples in 1979When the Lost Maples State Natural Area opened nearby in 1979, tourism to Utopia took off. Garner State Park is also close to town.
  • Seven Days in UtopiaMost of the 2011 film Seven Days in Utopia was shot here. The movie was adapted from the book Golf's Sacred Journey, whose subtitle promises seven days at Utopia's links. On July 26, 2023, totems promoting Travis Scott's album Utopia turned up in town, giving off a sound like a siren.
