This vintage linen postcard captures the Vagabond Motel along U.S. Highway 40, about 15 miles north of Baltimore in Bradshaw, Maryland. In the era when this card was made, U.S. Route 40 was one of America's great cross-country roads, tracing a path that followed the historic National Road and carrying a steady stream of motorists who needed a clean room and a warm welcome for the night — exactly the kind of traveler a roadside motel like this one hoped to greet.
From roughly the 1930s through the 1940s, "linen" postcards were the picture-postcard of their day, printed on textured card stock with bright, saturated colors that gave even an everyday motel a cheerful glow. This one comes from Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose work survives today in the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection. This edition has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL, bringing back the crisp lines and lively hues of the original.
