About Valentine, Nebraska

Valentine is a city of 2,633 people and the county seat of Cherry County. It sits at the top of the Sandhills, a short distance above the Niobrara River. The town was founded in 1882, and its post office opened on December 4 of that year. It took its name from Edward Kimball Valentine, who represented the district in Congress for three terms beginning in 1879.

The Sioux City and Pacific Railroad pushed its tracks out to the new town, and trains began running on April 1, 1883. Lakota speakers have two names for the town: OΓnaΕΎiΕ‹, meaning "station stopping place," and MninÑȟaȟa OtΘŸΓΊΕ‹wahe, meaning "water and waterfall city."

“The mountain and central time zones meet at the center of Main Street, so an hour separates the two curb lines.”

  • Half an hour on Main StreetAs late as 1967, the boundary between two time zones still divided Valentine down the middle. When daylight saving time ordered clocks set back an hour, the post office, which stood on the central side, compromised and moved its own clock back by just half an hour.
  • A Valentine's Day postmarkEach year thousands of cards and letters are sent to the Valentine post office so they can go out again stamped with a special Valentine's Day postmark and a verse. A large red neon heart glows on the pine-covered canyon wall of Minnechaduza Creek at the north end of Main Street, and at Christmas it turns into a star.
  • The Bryan Bridge of 1932Two bridges cross the Niobrara just south of town. U.S. Route 83 runs over the modern one, and just west of it stands the Bryan Bridge, a steel arched cantilever truss that Josef Sorkin designed and crews built in 1932. It still carries through traffic.
  • An adventure town in 2007National Geographic Adventure magazine put Valentine on its 2007 list of the 100 best adventure towns and cities. Merritt Reservoir, made by a dam on the Snake River, lies about 30 miles southwest, and Smith Falls, the tallest waterfall in Nebraska, drops about 15 miles east in Smith Falls State Park.
