About Valhalla, New York

Valhalla is a hamlet of 3,213 people in the town of Mount Pleasant, in Westchester County. The place was first known as Davis Brook. In 1861 a post office opened inside the train station, which was then called Kensico, but another hamlet nearby, Kensico, already had its own post office, so the new one needed a different name. Andrew J. Kinch was the postmaster, and his wife loved Richard Wagner's operas. She chose Valhalla, the hall where Odin welcomes fallen warriors in Norse myth. Around the early 20th century, the whole hamlet took up the post office's name.

  • A Revolutionary outpostBefore it was Valhalla, this ground was called Four Corners, or Young's Corners, and belonged to a landowner named Joseph Young. The Continental Army used his house as an outpost during the Revolutionary War. On February 3, 1780, British forces fought the American troops camped there in a skirmish remembered as the Battle of Young's House.
  • Kensico Cemetery, 1889Kensico Cemetery opened here in 1889. The cemeteries of New York City were filling up then, so new rural cemeteries were started near the railroads that served the city. Kensico began with 250 acres and grew to 600 in 1905. In 1912 it sold part of its land to the neighboring Gate of Heaven Cemetery, which left it with 460. Lou Gehrig, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Ayn Rand and NBC founder David Sarnoff are buried there.
  • Post 1038, chartered 1931Kensico Cemetery donated about two acres in 1947. Members built the first part of the post home with their own hands in 1951 and enlarged it in 1971. Railroad Avenue, which leads there, became Legion Drive.
  • The Rising, 2006On September 11, 2006, Westchester County and its September 11 Memorial Committee dedicated The Rising at the Kensico Dam. The memorial honors the 109 residents of the county who were killed in the terrorist attacks.
