About Vanoss, Oklahoma

Vanoss is an unincorporated community of 146 people in Pontotoc County, 10 miles west of Ada. It began as a town called Midland, which stood a few miles from where Vanoss is today. Around the time Oklahoma became a state, the Oklahoma Central Railroad was built through the area, but its route passed a few miles from Midland. Rather than be left off the line, the townspeople moved their whole town to the tracks and gave it a new name.

  • Named for a Dutch financierThe relocated town took its name from Salomon Frederik van Oss, known as S.F. Van Oss, a Dutch banker who was a director of the Oklahoma Central Railroad and put up money to build it. The railroad decided where the town would stand, and the man behind it gave the town its name.
  • Schools that still carry the nameLittle of the old community is left today, but Vanoss Public Schools still serve the surrounding area. The district runs Vanoss High School, a middle school and an elementary school, so the name of the railroad's backer lives on in the classrooms.
