This vintage linen postcard captures the Venice Motel & Restaurant along U.S. Route 40, just half a mile east of Hagerstown, Maryland , a roadside stop welcoming travelers in the golden era of the American automobile journey. U.S. Route 40 follows much of the path of the historic National Road, one of the first major highways built by the federal government, which helped carry generations of travelers and commerce westward through Washington County.
From roughly the 1930s through the 1940s, "linen" postcards like this one flourished, their textured paper stock and vivid, saturated colors turning everyday scenes into small works of art. This image comes from the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection, originally published by Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston. This edition has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL to bring back its original warmth and detail.
