About Vermont, Wisconsin

The town of Vermont was named by one of its settlers after his home state. Its first settler was Joshua Harmony, a German who arrived in 1846. Isaac C. Steele and Samuel Batty were among the early farmers. The town was organized in 1855.

By 1904, Vermont had become more fully a dairy town than any other town in Dane County. As dairying took over, fewer people were needed to work the farms. The town lost almost thirty-four percent of its people over thirty years.
