About Vicco, Kentucky
Vicco began as a coal mining town in Perry County. The letters in its name stand for the Virginia Iron Coal and Coke Company. In January 2013, the little city passed a law against discrimination based on sexual orientation. No smaller city in the nation had done that before.
- How the city endedAs coal declined, Vicco lost businesses and fell into deep budget trouble. Perry County officials called the city defunct in 2020. Kentucky formally dissolved Vicco on May 20, 2025.
