About Victor, Montana

Victor is a community of 789 people in Ravalli County, Montana. It sits in the southwest of the state beside the Bitterroot River, with the Bitterroot Range on one side and the Sapphire Mountains on the other. When the townsite was platted in 1881, its white settlers wanted to call it Garfield, after the president who had just been assassinated. Officials in Washington told them the name was already in use, so homesteaders proposed honoring Victor, a Salish chief whom the early settlers respected.

The young town leaned on nearby mines until 1893, when the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act forced many of them to close and hit Victor hard. The town recovered in the late 1890s as timber and farming grew, and its population rose from 745 in 2010 to 789 in 2020.

  • Chief Many HorsesThe town's namesake led the Bitterroot Salish, and his own name, Xweɫxƛ̣ ̓cín, means Many Horses. At 15 he met Lewis and Clark at Ross' Hole in September 1805. Later he refused to give up the Bitterroot Valley to Washington Territory. He died on a buffalo hunt in 1870, when he was about 80, and after his death his people were made to leave the valley for the Flathead Reservation.
  • Home of the PiratesVictor Public Schools teaches children from kindergarten through 12th grade in one district, and 261 students were enrolled in the 2021-2022 school year. The teams of Victor High School play as the Pirates.
