About Vidalia, Georgia

Vidalia is a city of 10,785 people, mostly in Toombs County, with its western edge reaching a little way into Montgomery County. No city in Toombs County is bigger, yet the county seat is Lyons, six miles to the east. The settlement first went by Jenkins Station, after Warren T. Jenkins, who owned land here, and it was incorporated on January 1, 1890.

The town grew up around a rail yard where nearby farmers sent off their pecans and tobacco. Its present name most likely came from a daughter of Samuel Hawkins, who headed the Savannah, Americus and Montgomery Railroad. Hawkins had four daughters, and nobody knows which one chose the name or where she found it.

  • Mose Coleman's sweet onionsOnions were not a major crop here until long after the town began. Around 1931 a farmer named Mose Coleman noticed that his onions tasted sweeter than other onions. Neighboring farmers began planting them too, and by the 1940s tourists were buying Vidalia onions to take home. In 1990 Georgia made the Vidalia onion its official state vegetable.
  • A name protected by lawGrowers worked to guard the Vidalia name. The Vidalia Onion Trademark Act of 1986 gave state trademark protection to onions grown around Vidalia and Toombs County. In 1989 the USDA's Federal Marketing Order #955 let growers and handlers form the Vidalia Onion Committee and protected the name nationwide. Today an onion sold as a Vidalia has to come from one of thirteen Georgia counties or from set parts of seven more.
  • Five days of onions each springEvery spring Vidalia holds the Vidalia Onion Festival, which runs for five days and draws visitors from far away. Year round, the Vidalia Onion Museum on Vidalia Sweet Onion Drive fills 1,300 square feet with exhibits on the onion's role in the local economy, culture and kitchen.
  • A railroad junctionIn the 1950s Piggly Wiggly opened a distribution center in Vidalia, which brought many jobs and more freight for the railroads. The Georgia and Florida line crossed the Seaboard Air Line Railroad in the city then, so a seven-track yard and a large engine shop were built here. The big yard was taken out in the 1970s, and Dot Foods now uses most of the old Piggly Wiggly building.
  • League champions in 1953From 1952 to 1956 the city had its own minor league team, the Vidalia Indians, a Class D farm club of the Cleveland Indians. Playing in the Georgia State League, the team won the league championship in 1953.
