This vintage linen postcard offers a sweeping view of Cumberland, Maryland, captured from the top of the court house tower and looking northeast across the rooftops, streets, and surrounding hills. Tucked into the Allegany County mountains along the Potomac River, Cumberland was long a vital gateway to the west , it served as the eastern terminus of the historic National Road, the first major highway funded by the federal government.
From the 1930s through the 1940s, the "linen" postcard enjoyed its golden age, prized for its softly textured paper stock and bright, saturated colors. This edition comes from the catalog of Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose work is preserved today in the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection. This particular card has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL to bring back its original warmth and detail.
