This vintage postcard captures a tranquil view of the Potomac River at Mountain Lock, below Sharpsburg and near Hagerstown, Maryland, in Washington County. The Potomac flows along Maryland's western border, and this stretch parallels the historic Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, whose stone locks once carried boats laden with coal, lumber, and grain along the riverbanks here.
From the 1930s through the 1940s, "linen" postcards enjoyed their golden age, prized for their textured paper stock and vivid, saturated colors. This card was published by Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose work is preserved today in the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection. This edition has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL to bring back its original charm.
