About Villa Ridge, Missouri

Villa Ridge is a community of 2,601 people in northeastern Franklin County, Missouri, about seven miles west of Pacific and six miles east of Union. It grew up as a stop on the Rock Island Railroad, and a post office under the Villa Ridge name has served it since 1889.

The town's first site sat high on a ridge, but it later moved down into a valley close by and kept its original name. Its best known landmark came later, when Route 66 brought a famous roadside restaurant called the Diamonds to town.

  • Named by the railroad builderMr. Emmerson, who oversaw construction of the railroad through the area, picked the name. The ridge he had in mind separates the streams that drain to the Meramec River from those that drain to the Missouri, and he added Villa to mean town.
  • The Diamonds, rebuilt in 1950The first Diamonds restaurant opened in 1928 and burned in 1949. Its owner rebuilt it beside Route 66 in 1950 as a streamlined Art Moderne building with an up-to-date restaurant in its north wing. A 1960 advertising postcard billed it as the world's largest roadside restaurant, feeding over a million people a year.
  • Following Interstate 44When Interstate 44 was built in the 1960s, traffic shifted to the new highway, so the Diamonds followed it. The restaurant moved into a new building along the interstate, about two miles northeast of its Route 66 home.
