About Villas, Florida
Villas is a community of 12,687 people in central Lee County, according to the 2020 census, up from 11,569 ten years earlier. U.S. Route 41 runs through it, leading 6 miles north to Fort Myers, the county seat, and 9 miles south to Estero.
Its largest landmark, Lakes Regional Park, was once a rock quarry. Crews dug rock from pits here during the 1960s, and over the years seeping groundwater, rain and runoff filled them. Lee County bought the site in 1978, broke ground in 1982 and opened the park to the public on April 21, 1984.
- A 158-acre quarry lakeThe flooded quarry pits became a single lake that covers 158 acres of the park's 279 acres. Once the county owned the land, it turned the old work site into a place for recreation, and the official grand opening came two years after the groundbreaking.
- A miniature railroad in 1995In 1995 a scale model railroad opened in Lakes Regional Park. Its 15 minute trip winds through the northern part of the grounds, running alongside the lake, through a tunnel and past small displays of villages, towns and natural areas.
