About Wadena, Minnesota

Wadena is a city of 4,325 people and the seat of Wadena County, where U.S. Highways 10 and 71 cross. It took its name from the Wadena trading post, which sat on a bluff above the Crow Wing River where travelers on the trail between Crow Wing, Otter Tail City and Pembina crossed by ferry. After the Northern Pacific built its line through the area, the county seat was placed on the railroad in 1872, fifteen miles west of the old post, and the name moved with it.

The first settlers had come in the fall of 1871. A post office opened in 1873, the same year Wadena County was organized, and the railway village was incorporated on February 14, 1881.

  • A little round hillWadena is an old Ojibway word meaning "a little round hill," according to the Rev. J. A. Gilfillan. J. V. Brower, who visited the old ferry in 1863 and came back in 1899, believed it pointed to the rounded Crow Wing bluffs there. It was also a personal name among the Ojibway. Locals stress the middle syllable and sound each a as in father.
  • The EF4 tornado of 2010On June 17, 2010, during the largest single-day tornado outbreak in Minnesota history, an EF4 storm tore through Wadena. Its winds reached 170 miles per hour, and it damaged at least 232 homes, about 30 percent of the houses in town. No one in Wadena died, though 34 people were treated for injuries. The Community Center and the high school were wrecked, then torn down and rebuilt, and a new Middle-High School opened in the fall of 2012.
  • The Largest Puzzle in the WorldMore than 40 artists painted over 100 murals on downtown buildings, and together the panels tell 1,000 years of Minnesota history. The Alley Arts Committee started the project to brighten the town's alleys, and visitors can pick up a tour map at the train depot.
