About Wahoo, Nebraska

Wahoo is a city of 4,818 people and the county seat of Saunders County. It was founded in 1870 by settlers who were mostly Czech, German and Scandinavian. The town took its name from the eastern wahoo, a shrub that grew along the banks of Wahoo Creek. The word comes from the Dakota wǧhu, which means arrow wood.

“In 1963, Howard Hanson heard of the town's interest in his home and especially of the Wahoo Women's Club's interest in restoring the home and donated the funds to purchase his birthplace for the City of Wahoo.”
National Register nomination, 1982
  • Letterman's home office, 1996In February 1996, David Letterman's Late Show moved the "home office" that produced its Top Ten List from Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Wahoo. The town had campaigned for months. It had the Nebraska legislature name Letterman an admiral of the state's Great Navy, and residents flooded him with letters, postcards and gifts, from flowers and animals to shredded money. The CBS website called its nightly recap of the list The Wahoo Gazette.
  • A Pinto with a sofaDuring Wahoo's campaign for the Late Show's home office, Letterman joked that he wanted more. The town answered by sending him a Ford Pinto with a sofa on its hood, a clock made of cow droppings and two local teenage brothers, Jeff and Josh Price.
  • Softball champions from 1969John F. Kennedy College operated in Wahoo from 1965 to 1975. Its softball team won the very first tournament of what later became the Women's College World Series, starting in 1969, and then took the next two national titles as well, which made the small college known across the country.
  • Composer Howard HansonHoward Hanson was born in Wahoo on October 28, 1896. As a boy he studied piano and cello, and he was writing his own piano pieces by age seven. He went on to win a Pulitzer Prize as a composer and also worked as a conductor, author and educator. The house where he was born became city property and joined the National Register in 1983.
