About Waialua, Hawaii
Waialua is a North Shore community of 4,062 people on Oʻahu, in the City and County of Honolulu. In ancient Hawaii it was one of the island's six original districts, known as moku. Planters started a sugarcane plantation here in 1865, but the business took decades to become a success.
The change came in 1898, when Castle and Cooke bought the plantation and put up a new mill, along with a railway, irrigation and reservoirs to store water. As the sugar industry grew, it needed more workers, and they arrived from China, Portugal, Japan, Korea, Puerto Rico, the Philippines and Spain to work Waialua's cane fields. By 1991 the Waialua Sugar Mill made 8 percent of Hawaii's sugar. Rising labor and production costs then sent producers overseas, but many plantation families stayed, and their descendants still live in Waialua.
- From the Philippines at 17Emigdio Cabico was born in the Philippines in 1909 and came to Hawaii at 17 for a job with the Waialua Sugar Company. After 10 years he was managing a plantation store, and later he opened a store of his own.
- The mill at the centerThe Waialua Sugar Mill sits at the heart of town and anchors its plantation history. Waialua grew as a sugar mill town and is now mostly homes, a calmer place than Haleʻiwa next door, which caters more to shoppers and visitors.
- Navy guns in World War IIDuring World War II, the twin guns of the USS Saratoga were set up 1.5 miles off Kamehameha Highway near Waialua. They served as gun batteries attached to the Hawaiian Pineapple Company's Camp Brodie 4.
- Sunlight on old cane landThe state approved the Kawailoa Solar farm near Waialua in 2017. SunEdison started the project, NRG Energy's Community Solar division took it over in November 2016, and the 49-megawatt farm began running on September 10, 2019. Hawaiian Electric agreed to buy its power at 11 cents per kilowatt-hour for 22 years.
