About Wainwright, Alaska

Wainwright is a city of 628 people in North Slope Borough, on the Chukchi Sea about 72 miles southwest of Utqiaġvik. The Iñupiat have long lived in this region, which they call Ulġuniq, fishing, hunting and whaling for bowhead to feed their families. In 1826 Captain F.W. Beechey and his men became the first outsiders to reach the nearby lagoon, and Beechey named it after Lieutenant John Wainwright, one of the officers serving under him.

A map drawn in 1853 called the village Olrona, and by 1890 the area was known as Wainwright Inlet. The present village dates from 1904. That year the Alaska Native Service opened a school there and began offering medical care and other services, a post office followed in 1916, and Wainwright was incorporated as a city in 1962.

  • A Cold War radar stationIn 1953 a Distant Early Warning Line station was built near Wainwright during the Cold War. Crews staffed it until 1989, and in 1994 it was turned into an unstaffed Short Range Radar Station. The station closed for good in 2008.
  • Olgoonik Corporation, 1973Under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, Wainwright founded Olgoonik Corporation in 1973 as its Alaska Native village corporation.
  • Between Point Hope and BarrowPeople have settled here for centuries, and several villages have stood in turn on the strip of ground between the inlet and the open sea. Wainwright is the latest of them, and it is the main village on the coast between Point Hope and Barrow.
  • One school, every gradeWainwright's only school is Alak School, part of the North Slope Borough School District. It teaches students from pre-kindergarten through grade 12.
