About Wakpala, South Dakota

Wakpala is a community of 267 people in Corson County, west of the Missouri River and north-northwest of Mobridge. It sits inside the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. The town's name comes from the Lakota word for creek, and Oak Creek flows south along its eastern side. Two of the best-known Lakota chiefs are tied to the ground in and around Wakpala.

  • Resting place of Chief GallChief Gall, called Pizi in Lakota, died at his home at Oak Creek in December 1894, at the age of 55. He was laid to rest in Wakpala's Saint Elizabeth Episcopal Cemetery, where his grave remains today.
  • Sitting Bull's second graveChief Sitting Bull, Tȟatȟáŋka Íyotake in Lakota, was first buried at Fort Yates, North Dakota. Later, people set out to dig up his bones and rebury them a few miles south of Wakpala, near Mobridge. A concrete bust with his name now stands at that spot, though no one can say for certain that his remains lie beneath it.
  • Wacipi in late AugustEvery year on the last weekend in August, Wakpala holds its Wacipi, a dance or powwow that brings people together in town.
