About Walhalla, South Carolina

Walhalla is a city of 4,072 people in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and it is the seat of Oconee County. In 1848 the German Colonization Society was formed in Charleston to help immigrants who had fled the failed German revolutions find new homes in the Upstate, and many of them were liberal merchants and farmers.

On December 24, 1849, the society's trustees, among them General John A. Wagener, paid Reverend Joseph Grisham of West Union $27,000 for 17,859 acres in the Pickens District. The colonists, many of them Bavarians who had sailed from Hamburg to Charleston, founded the town in 1850. Because most of them were political refugees, they named it Valhalla, for the Norse afterlife where chosen warriors waited to fight at Ragnarök, and English and Scots-Irish farmers settled among them.

  • County seat in 1868When Oconee County was organized during Reconstruction in 1868, the state legislature chose Walhalla as its seat. Newcomers then moved in, mostly from nearby Pickens and Anderson counties, until they outnumbered the German families who had founded the town. The Oconee County Courthouse joined the National Register in 2016.
  • The Walhalla RiflemenThe town raised a militia company, the Walhalla Riflemen, in 1852. When the Civil War broke out, it was one of the first militia units in the state to offer itself for Confederate service.
  • Oktoberfest every OctoberWalhalla's German roots led the town to hold an Oktoberfest each year. It opens on the third Friday of October at Sertoma Field, between the middle school and downtown, with music, dancing, crafts, food and carnival rides. Soon after it ends, local businesses fill Main Street for the Merchant Market.
  • First woman mayor, 1988In 1988 Walhalla voters elected Gladys Pepper as mayor. She was the first woman to lead the city, and she remains the only one.
