About Wanamassa, New Jersey
Wanamassa is a community of 4,344 people in Ocean Township, Monmouth County, with Deal Lake along its southern edge. Each summer, Lenape people of the Delaware Nation came to the lake to fish its waters and hunt the land around it, and the community is named for one of their leaders, the 17th-century sachem Wanamassa.
For more than two centuries after the Lenape sold the land, Wanamassa stayed rural, and its farmers sold their produce along Logan Town Road. Houses began to go up after the turn of the century, and after the Second World War new homes filled the open land, making Wanamassa the most populated neighborhood in Ocean Township.
- The 1687 deedIn 1687 the Scotsman Gavin Drummond bought much of the land bordering Deal Lake, "with consent of Indian and their tribes." Three chief sachems, Wanamassa, Wallammassekaman and Waywinotunce, signed the deed for a tract within the lake's branches, a place the Lenape called Wickapecko.
- 250 lots on Wanamassa PointThe YMCA owned a tract along Wanamassa Point, and in 1907 some 250 lots were sold from it. That sale came as homebuilding was just starting in a place still known for its farms.
- Homes for returning veteransAfter the Second World War, veterans came home looking for good schools and the area's growing job market. Using G.I. mortgages, they bought houses being built on the open land of Ocean Township, and Wanamassa was where many of those homes went up.
