About Warm Springs, Oregon

Warm Springs is a community of 2,435 people in Jefferson County, and many know it as the Warm Springs Agency. It sits at 1,539 feet in the valley of Shitike Creek, on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation, with the Deschutes River along its eastern edge.

The reservation comes from a treaty signed in 1855. Under it, the Wasco and Warm Springs people handed over about ten million acres, but they kept this land for their use alone. They also held on to their right to fish, hunt and gather food off the reservation, in the places where they always had.

“We could see that the old ways were disappearing, the old language was disappearing, and pretty soon none of our young people would know where they came from or who they were.”
Chief Delvis Heath, Museum at Warm Springs
  • Oregon's first tribal museumIn 1988 tribal members voted to pay for a museum, and in the end the Tribes spent more than 3.2 million dollars on it. No Indian tribe had ever set aside more for a museum. Its doors first opened to visitors on March 13, 1993, making it Oregon's first tribal museum. Its buildings are arranged like a traditional encampment, set among cottonwoods beside Shi-tike Creek.
  • Paiutes arrive in 1879In 1879, 38 Paiutes moved here after leaving the Yakama Reservation, and their arrival started the Paiute settlement at Warm Springs. In time the three tribes, Warm Springs, Wasco and Paiute, drafted a shared constitution and bylaws and united under one government, the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs.
