This vintage postcard captures the Washington Monument rising above Mt. Vernon Place in Baltimore, Maryland. Designed by architect Robert Mills, this towering column was the first major monument begun in honor of George Washington, with its cornerstone laid in 1815. For generations, the surrounding squares of Mt. Vernon have stood as one of Baltimore's most elegant and beloved neighborhoods.
From roughly the 1930s through the 1950s, American "linen" postcards reached their golden age, prized for their textured finish and vivid, saturated colors. This card comes from the work of Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose images are preserved today in the renowned Tichnor Brothers Collection. This edition has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL to bring back its original warmth and detail.
