About Washington Park, Illinois

Washington Park is a village of 2,592 people in St. Clair County, Illinois. The 2020 census count was down from 4,196 people in 2010. The village covers 2.63 square miles, all of it land, and its children attend schools in the East St. Louis School District, including Avant Elementary School in the village itself.

  • Wilson School, 1927 to 2004Woodrow Wilson Elementary School opened in Washington Park in 1927. In July 2004 Stan Mims, the district's CEO, toured the building and decided it had to close. It shut that fall, and its students moved to three other elementary schools: Hawthorne, Nelson Mandela and Manners, which also once stood in Washington Park.
  • Two bankruptcy filingsIn 2004 the village filed for bankruptcy over $1.6 million in debt, but the case was dismissed when Washington Park briefly got out of insolvency. It filed again under Chapter 9 in July 2009, reporting under $50,000 in assets and over $1 million in debt. In December 2010 U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Pamela Pepper dismissed that case too, ruling that no Illinois law allowed a municipality to declare bankruptcy.
  • A MetroLink stopRiders on the St. Louis MetroLink light rail system can board at Washington Park station, which serves the village.
