About Watertown, South Dakota

Watertown is a city of 22,655 people and the county seat of Codington County. It sits on the Big Sioux River between Lake Kampeska and Pelican Lake. The town began in 1879 at the end of a railroad line, when the Chicago & Northwestern put part of an old track out to Lake Kampeska back into use. The founders first planned to call the place Kampeska.

Instead, the town took the name of Watertown, New York. That was the hometown of John E. and Oscar P. Kemp, two of its founders, and Oscar was the grandfather of Jack Kemp. Through the 1880s the railroads pushed farther west, and Watertown grew into a busy hub for travel and freight. When South Dakota became a state, Watertown was one of several cities that hoped to be its capital, but the more central Pierre won.

  • A newspaper since 1887The Watertown Public Opinion started printing in 1887 and still comes out every day. The Watertown Current is a weekly paper.
  • The highway that bent for WatertownBuilders laid Interstate 29 across eastern South Dakota in the middle of the 20th century. They gave the route a slight bend so it would pass closer to Watertown. The new highway became a major boost for the city and the towns around it.
  • Home of the Redlin Art CenterThe Redlin Art Center holds many works by the wildlife artist Terry Redlin. He drew ideas for his paintings from Lake Kampeska and Pelican Lake. The city is also home to the Bramble Park Zoo.
