About Waterville, Vermont
Luke P. Poland spent his boyhood in Waterville and later represented the town in the Legislature. He became chief judge of the Vermont Supreme Court. He then filled the rest of Senator Collamer's term in the U.S. Senate. In Congress he was a leading House member during Reconstruction.
Vermont chartered the land in 1788 as Coit's Gore. In 1824 the Legislature joined it with corners of Bakersfield and Belvidere to form Waterville. People in those corners had found it hard to reach their own town meetings.
- The town's soapstone quarrySoapstone was quarried and worked in Waterville in the 1840s. The stone was easy to shape and stood up to heat. Builders used it for ovens and furnaces.
