About Wauchula, Florida

Wauchula takes its name from an Indian word for the sandhill crane. The town grew up around Fort Hartsuff, an early military post built to protect settlers during the Seminole Wars. Later a frog leg trade prospered here, with frogs caught at night in the nearby swamps and creeks.

  • The town's farm prideWauchula has been called the cucumber capital of the world. Over the past few decades, though, citrus has become the more important crop.
