About the City of Waukesha, Wisconsin
Waukesha is a city of 71,158 people on the Fox River and the seat of Waukesha County. Morris D. Cutler arrived in 1834 as its first settler, one of many New England farmers who moved west once the Erie Canal opened and the Black Hawk War ended. They cleared farms in dense forest and open prairie, built roads and schools, and carried strong abolitionist views with them.
In 1846 the settlement was organized as the town of Prairie Village, a name soon shortened to Prairieville, and on February 8, 1847, it became Waukesha. The name probably comes from the Ojibwe word for foxes, Waagoshag, or from Wau-tsha, the Potawatomi leader here when settlers came. The village split from the town on January 10, 1852, and became a city in 1896, with John Brehm as its first appointed mayor.
“area newspapers carried accounts of a community ill equipped to handle its new popularity among the suffering multitudes.”
- The Saratoga of the WestIn 1868 Colonel Richard Dunbar, who suffered from diabetes, was looking over land his sister had just bought when he found a spring he came to believe could heal him. He named it the Bethesda Spring. Within a few years about 500 visitors at a time crowded the hotels and private homes, and Chicago pioneer Matthew Laflin built the Fountain Spring House resort. Waukesha became known as Spring City and the Saratoga of the West.
- A pipeline to the 1893 fairThe spring water was prized so highly that Charles Welsh, who had received springs from his uncle, set out to pipe it to Chicago for visitors to the 1893 Columbian Exposition. Crews laid several miles of pipe before the cost proved too great, and the plan was dropped.
- Football's first forward passCarroll College, opened by the Presbyterians in 1846 and the oldest college in Wisconsin, hosted St. Louis University on September 5, 1906. During that game Bradbury Robinson, a halfback for the visitors, made football's first legal forward pass, which caught the Carroll players and the home crowd by surprise. St. Louis won 22 to 0.
- A Nike missile postDuring the Cold War the Army, and later the Wisconsin National Guard, ran a Nike missile command center on Davidson Road between 1956 and 1970, on land that has since become Hillcrest Park. The missile pits near Cleveland Avenue and Highway 164 first held Ajax missiles, then nuclear Hercules warheads, and the site has been promoted as a local Cold War museum.
- Lake Michigan water in 2023As the springs dried up or were spoiled, the city's wells began drawing water with too much radium. Because Waukesha lies outside the Lake Michigan basin, it needed the approval of eight governors to tap the lake, and they granted it in June 2016. The city switched to lake water in 2023, through 35 miles of pipelines finished in 2024.
