About the City of Wausau, Wisconsin
Wausau is a city of 39,994 people on the Wisconsin River and the county seat of Marathon County. French explorers named this stretch Big Bull Falls for its long rapids, whose churning water was full of bubbles, bulle in French. The Ojibwe gave up much of their land here to the United States in an 1836 treaty, and the city's name comes from the Ojibwe word waasa, meaning a faraway place.
George Stevens began cutting the pine forests in 1840 and built a sawmill, and other sawmills soon went up along the river. Walter McIndoe arrived by 1846, took the lead in local business and helped create Marathon County in 1850. Wausau was a town by 1852, and German immigrants arrived after the Revolutions of 1848. It became a village in 1861 and a city in 1872. The railroad reached Wausau in 1874, so when the pine was gone by 1906, the city kept growing while other lumber towns declined.
- 702 settlers from GermanyAugust Kickbusch was elected Wausau's first mayor in 1872. Five years before that, he had gone back to his native Germany and returned with 702 people, and it's believed that every one of them settled in or near Wausau. He also started the A. Kickbusch Wholesale Grocery Company, which stayed in the family when his grandson later ran it.
- The Philosopher Press, 1897In January 1897, Philip V. O. Van Vechten and William Ellis started the Philosopher Press in Wausau. It printed their magazine, The Philosopher, and turned out small runs of books made by hand.
- Skiing on Rib Mountain since 1937In 1937 Wausau residents cleared six ski runs on Rib Mountain by hand, put up the longest ski lift in the nation and built a chalet of stone quarried close by. Today the area is Granite Peak, with 74 runs and seven lifts on Wisconsin's tallest skiable mountain.
- A depot on the insurance logoAfter the lumber ran out, Employers Insurance of Wausau led the city into new kinds of business in the early 20th century. In 1954 the company introduced a logo showing the downtown Milwaukee Road depot in front of the Wausau skyline. The company is now part of Liberty Mutual.
