About the Village of Wauzeka, Wisconsin

Wauzeka is a village of 628 people in Crawford County, Wisconsin, close to where the Kickapoo River flows into the Wisconsin River. Hercules L. Dousman platted the village in 1856. A year later John McHarg, a local veteran of the Mexican-American War, added more land to the plat, and in that same year of 1857 the Milwaukee & Mississippi Railroad reached the new village.

  • Named for Pine TreeThe village takes its name from a Native American leader. His Ho-Chunk name, Waaziga, means Pine Tree.
  • Sawmills on the KickapooThrough the nineteenth century, loggers floated pine in rafts down the Kickapoo River to Wauzeka. Several sawmills in the village cut those logs into lumber.
  • Where two rivers meetAn 1884 county history traces the Kickapoo south through Crawford County to the Wisconsin, meeting it on section 11 of the town of Wauzeka, a little below the village. North of the Wisconsin, the land was almost all river bottoms, thick with timber.
  • Miss Gould's first schoolBy 1884 the village belonged to school district No. 2. Its first teacher was Miss Gould, who came from Prairie du Chien.
