About Waverly, Tennessee

Waverly is a city of 4,297 people and the county seat of Humphreys County, set in the Trace Creek Valley between low ridges of the Highland Rim. Steven Pavatt founded it in the early 19th century as a stop for stagecoaches traveling between Nashville and Memphis. He admired Sir Walter Scott, so he named the place for Scott's Waverley Novels.

When Humphreys County was formed in 1803, its seat was Reynoldsburg, on the Tennessee River northwest of here. In 1835 the county's land west of the river went to the new Benton County, which left Waverly closer to the center. The seat moved to Waverly that year, a courthouse followed in 1836, and the town was incorporated in 1838.

  • A Union fort on the squareHumphreys County voted unanimously for secession in 1861, but Union troops took Waverly in 1863. General Rosecrans had them guard the railroad from White Bluff to the supply depot at Johnsonville, and they built a fort on the courthouse square while Confederate guerrillas harassed them. On November 4, 1864, Nathan Bedford Forrest's troops destroyed the Johnsonville depot, about 10 miles west at the mouth of Trace Creek. Fort Hill joined the National Register in 2001.
  • The 1978 tank car explosionOn February 24, 1978, an L&N train derailed in downtown Waverly, and a tank car of propane later exploded, killing 16 people. The disaster changed how the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency handles hazardous material spills, and the National Transportation Safety Board tightened its rules, including standards for how rail cars are designed and built.
  • Peanuts by river bargeFarmers in Humphreys County grew peanuts, and big warehouses in Waverly and Johnsonville held the harvest until barges carried it away on the Tennessee River.
  • The flood of 2021On the morning of August 21, 2021, more than 17 inches of rain sent Trace Creek over its banks through the middle of town. Water up to 4 feet deep filled homes, churches, businesses and Waverly Elementary School, some houses were swept off their foundations, and floodwater cut off the roads leading into town. Twenty people died in Humphreys County.
