About Webster, Burnett County, Wisconsin
Webster is a village of 694 people in Burnett County, on Wisconsin Highway 35, about 65 miles south of Superior. It sits inside the town of Meenon but governs itself as a separate village. The settlement was known as Clam River until 1896, when it got a new post office. A resident, J.D. Rice, wrote to Congressman John J. Jenkins asking for a new name, and the village became Webster, after Noah Webster, the maker of the famous dictionary.
- A pickle factory around 1916Around 1916 a pickle factory stood in Webster, just west of the railroad tracks. Local farmers grew cucumbers for it under contract. They had to pick the crop every other day and haul it to the factory, where workers sorted the cucumbers by grade.
- Wisconsin's second largest districtThe School District of Webster spreads over about 550 square miles, mostly in Burnett County with a small piece of southwest Douglas County, which makes it Wisconsin's second largest district by area. Its students come from the village, the towns of Meenon, Swiss and Dairyland, the community of Danbury and land of the St. Croix Chippewa Indians of Wisconsin. In the 2017-2018 school year it enrolled 655 students.
