About Weiser, Idaho

Weiser is a city of 5,630 people and the seat of Washington County, where the Weiser River runs into the Snake River on the Oregon border. William Logan and his wife Nancy settled nearby in 1863 and built a roadhouse, expecting travelers from a new ferry on the Snake. That same year Reuben Olds won a franchise from the Territorial Legislature and opened Olds Ferry, which pulled traffic away from the old crossing at Old Fort Boise, and both businesses did well.

Thomas G. Galloway also started a farm here in September 1863, living in a cabin of willow logs with a dirt roof, no floor and no window. More settlers kept arriving in the Weiser River valley, and a post office opened in 1866 under the name Weiser Ranch. It became simply Weiser in 1871, and the town reached its peak once a railroad station turned it into a transportation hub.

  • The Big Train in 1906After finishing high school in Fullerton, California, young Walter Johnson was lured to Weiser to pitch for a semi-pro team, the Weiser Kids, and to work for the telephone company. Here he once threw 84 scoreless innings in a row. The Washington Nationals sent scout Cliff Blankenship with a contract, and in July 1907, at nineteen, Johnson left for the major leagues and a career that put him in the Hall of Fame.
  • Fiddling contests since 1914Weiser has held fiddling contests since 1914 and calls itself the Fiddling Capital of the World. Blaine Stubblefield, a fiddler and folk music collector who led the chamber of commerce, came up with the National Oldtime Fiddlers' Contest, and it has run every year since 1953. It comes each June and brings over 7,000 people to the area.
  • Edward Paddock's academyA preacher named Edward Paddock founded Weiser Academy, also called Intermountain Institute, a 750-acre boarding school, in or after the 1890s. When Paddock grew old and ill, the National Youth Administration took over part of the campus in the 1930s, and in 1948 the whole property was given to the high school.
  • Gateway to Hells CanyonAs the last city upriver from Hells Canyon, Weiser was for years the starting point for powered rubber raft trips down the gorge, and anglers came for huge sturgeon and plentiful salmon. The salmon runs ended soon after the float tours, once Idaho Power Company began building three hydro-power dams on the river in the 1950s.
