About Wellsville, Pennsylvania
Wellsville is a borough in York County whose built character still reflects the nineteenth century. The community has brick sidewalks and Gothic Revival and Greek Revival houses, and its early growth centered on a whip factory moved here in 1841. Nearly all of Wellsville became a National Register historic district in 1977.
- Whip Factory OriginsThe Wells whip business moved from York to Wellsville in 1841, and the town began to form around the industry about 1843.
- Civil War ContractsDuring the Civil War, the factory supplied the United States government with artillery whips and belts under several large contracts.
- Methodist LandmarkA Methodist church completed in 1853 is among the historic district's 48 contributing properties.
- Wellsville HouseThe 1870s Wellsville House has served as a factory, museum, and restaurant.
