About West Buffalo, Pennsylvania

West Buffalo is a township of 2,886 people in Union County, in the Buffalo Valley, where the north and southwest branches of Buffalo Creek shaped the land. At its January sessions in 1792, the court split Buffalo Township of Northumberland County into two halves, East and West Buffalo. Elias Youngman, who laid out the town of Mifflinburg that same summer, became West Buffalo's first supervisor.

For about two decades the township belonged to Northumberland County. When Union County was created on March 22, 1813, Mifflinburg was chosen as its county seat. The town grew until 1827, when it was incorporated as the Borough of Mifflinburg and was no longer part of West Buffalo Township.

  • Two towns on Third StreetElias Youngman started Mifflinburg in 1792. Around 1795 George Rote, whose name also appears as Roth or Rhoads, laid out a second town called Greenville right beside it, and Third Street marked the line between the two. Both towns stood inside West Buffalo Township until the Borough of Mifflinburg was incorporated in 1827.
  • A line from two gum saplingsThe 1792 dividing line started at two gum saplings on the boundary of White Deer and Buffalo, a little west of Daniel Rengler's old sawmill. It ran south to the head of the spring at Andrew Pontious' place, then followed Sweitzer's run down to Penn's Creek at Philip Seebold's. East Buffalo kept the plain name Buffalo in deeds for years, and only the assessment books called it East Buffalo.
  • The Hayes BridgeThe Hayes Bridge carries traffic over the southwest branch of Buffalo Creek. It takes its name from Robert Hayes, who owned land nearby, and it joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
