About West Frankfort, Illinois

West Frankfort is a city of 7,275 people in Franklin County, Illinois, and its name goes back to a frontier fort. Around 1810, with Tecumseh's War raising fears of attack, Francis "Frank" Jordan, a settler from Tennessee, began building a hilltop fort with his seven brothers. Territorial governor Ninian Edwards backed the work and offered the Saline Militia to help, and Frank's Fort was finished in 1811.

The Shawnee Trail, a trading route between Kaskaskia and Old Shawneetown, ran along the high ground near the fort, and settlers came for cheap land. Their settlement took the fort's name, later shortened to Frankfort, and was the first county seat until 1839, when the county's southern half became Williamson County. Later a railroad connecting Chicago, Paducah and Memphis was built 4 miles west. Its depot was named West Frankfort, and many families and businesses moved down from the hill, some bringing their houses along. The two towns later merged as West Frankfort. The old hilltop town is still called Frankfort Heights, or "The Heights," and kept its own post office until fire destroyed it in 2004.

“The Eldorado of Franklin County had been discovered, and the wild rush, like California of '49 soon made a busy place of West Frankfort.”
Franklin County History
  • The Tri-State Tornado, 1925The Tri-State Tornado of 1925 tore through West Frankfort, along with many other towns in its path. Here it took 148 lives and flattened more than 500 homes.
  • Old Ben No. 8, twiceMine No. 8 of the Old Ben Coal Company exploded on December 1, 1929, killing 7 people. On July 24, 1947, the same mine blew up a second time, and 27 people died.
  • Orient No. 2, December 1951The Orient No. 2 mine outside town was one of the area's biggest employers. On December 21, 1951, an explosion there killed 119 men, and the junior high school served as a temporary morgue where the dead were identified. People who were children then remember losing family or watching classmates grieve, and some residents vowed never to celebrate Christmas again.
  • A Cardinals farm teamFrom 1947 to 1950 the town had its own minor-league baseball club, the West Frankfort Cardinals, a Class D farm team of the St. Louis Cardinals.
  • Candy Cane LaneEvery Christmas, several blocks of homes light up as Candy Cane Lane, and one of the biggest displays belongs to a local art teacher. In 2019, ABC's The Great Christmas Light Fight featured parts of the display.
