About West Point, California

In the summer of 1853, rangers reached a river swollen with melting snow. When the water dropped, they crossed with a Mexican man named Campanya. They found the Texas Lone Star and Riverside mines. Miners poured in, most of them Mexican, and the town of West Point was soon started. Fernando Dudine started the first store, hidden in a dense pine forest. A grapevine arbor later marked the spot where West Point was first founded.

In 1866 the Calaveras Chronicle reported that most gold taken out at West Point was sent below by way of Volcano. That gold swelled the returns of Amador County. The paper said the credit belonged to Calaveras.
