About Westgate, Florida
Westgate is a community of 8,435 people in Palm Beach County, in South Florida. It began in 1921 as a subdivision called Westgate Estates, which then sat at the far western edge of West Palm Beach. Because it lay on the city's western side, its founders named it as the gateway into West Palm Beach from that direction.
- Cheap land in hard timesThe ground under Westgate Estates was swampland, so it cost little to build there. After the Depression of 1929, many families from the South who had lost money settled here, either building homes of their own or renting or buying houses that already stood.
- Outside the city since 1931Westgate Estates began as the westernmost part of West Palm Beach. In 1931 the city de-annexed the subdivision, and Westgate has stayed unincorporated ever since.
- Its own name in 2010For years the Census Bureau counted Westgate together with its neighbor as Westgate-Belvedere Homes. Starting with the 2010 census, Westgate was listed as a census-designated place under its own name, covering 1.5 square miles.
