About Westminster, Maryland

Westminster is a city of 20,126 people and the county seat of Carroll County, Maryland. William Winchester, who lived from 1706 to 1790, bought about 167 acres here in 1754. The land was known as White's Level, and in 1764 he laid out a town on it and named it Winchester. Virginia already had a town by that name, so in 1768 the Maryland General Assembly renamed it Westminster to end the mix-up.

The Civil War reached the town's streets on June 28, 1863. Two companies of Delaware cavalry rode into a far larger Confederate force led by General J. E. B. Stuart, in a fight now called Corbit's Charge. The Delaware men could not win, but their attack held Stuart up while he was on his way to join the Battle of Gettysburg.

  • Memorial Day parades since 1868Westminster has marched every Memorial Day since 1868. Few towns in the country have kept a Memorial Day parade going without a break for as long.
  • First Rural Free DeliveryA historic marker in Westminster credits the town with starting Rural Free Delivery mail service before any other place in the country.
  • A seminary founded in 1882Westminster Theological Seminary was founded here in 1882. By 1940, when the state guide to Maryland was written, the school had a three-story building on its campus that the guide described as modern. Today McDaniel College is in the city as well.
  • Gigabit fiber in 2015On June 26, 2015, the city switched on the Westminster Fiber Network, built with its partner Ting Inc. It was the first gigabit fiber network in the Mid-Atlantic to reach a whole community, carrying the lines all the way to each home and business.
  • A diplomat and a Simpsons writerSargent Shriver, whose career took him into diplomacy, politics and activism, came from Westminster. Bill Oakley, who wrote and produced for television and is known above all for his work on The Simpsons, is also from the city. Clyfford Still, a painter of the abstract expressionist school, owned a farm near the town.
