About White City, Oregon
White City is a community of 9,090 people in Jackson County, in the Rogue Valley about 9 miles north of Medford. It began as Camp White, an Army post the government put up on the Agate Desert as the United States entered the Second World War. Work on the $27 million camp started in January 1942, and crews kept at it day and night for six months.
At its height the camp held more than 40,000 soldiers. When the war ended, most of its buildings were salvaged for their materials, and a few were hauled whole to the University of Oregon. The camp's brick hospital stayed and became a Veterans Administration domiciliary, and in 1960 the former camp center and the settlement growing up around it took the name White City.
- Named for George A. WhiteThe Army named its camp for George A. White, who served for many years as adjutant general of the Oregon National Guard. When the old camp and its neighbors were renamed in 1960, the community kept his name.
- A hospital that stayedThe brick buildings of Camp White's Station Hospital outlasted the rest of the camp and became the Veterans Administration Domiciliary. The Camp White Station Hospital Administration Building is on the National Register, and White City is home to the main Department of Veterans Affairs hospital serving southern Oregon.
- From 7,975 to 9,090White City grew from 7,975 people in 2010 to 9,090 in 2020. It sits 4 miles south of Eagle Point, and The Nature Conservancy's Agate Desert Preserve, named for the same ground where the Army built its camp, lies on the town's west side.
