About White House Station, New Jersey
White House Station is a community of 3,152 people in Readington Township, Hunterdon County. Abraham Van Horne arrived in 1733 and kept an inn for travelers, and because the building's walls were white, people began calling it the White House. Over time the name spread from the tavern to the whole neighborhood around it.
The station village came into being in 1847, when the railroad was built through White House. Memorial Park Cemetery now lies near the site of Van Horne's old tavern, and it is cared for by the Daughters of the American Revolution's chapter in the area.
“White House got its name from the Inn of Abraham Van Horne who came here in 1733. Van Horne’s Inn was located along an important Indian path and was the only place of rest for travelers for many miles.”
- A railroad junction in 1888White House was mostly a farming community until 1888. That year the Rockaway Valley Railroad received its charter, with plans to run 25 miles from here to Morristown. The new line turned White House into a junction stop. The Rockaway Valley stopped running in 1913, and today trains on New Jersey Transit's Raritan Valley Line are the only ones that stop here.
- A stone station by Bradford GilbertThe architect Bradford L. Gilbert designed White House Station in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, building it of stone on a single floor. Its Ladies Waiting Room survived intact, stone fireplace and all, and the station is listed on the National Register.
- Merck's world headquartersFor more than two decades the pharmaceutical company Merck ran its global business from Whitehouse Station, in the modernist Merck Headquarters Building. The company later moved its base of operations to Rahway.
- Earthquake on April 5, 2024At 10:23 that morning, a magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck the community. Nobody was hurt, and nothing suffered major damage. Later, at 5:59 that evening, a second quake, measured at magnitude 3.8, hit east of town in Gladstone.
