About Whiteford, Michigan
Whiteford is a township of 4,590 people in Monroe County, in the southwest corner of the county, where the Lenawee County line and the Ohio state line meet. Voters gathered at William Wilson's house on April 7, 1834, to organize the township. They elected David White, a general and pioneer settler, as the first supervisor, and the township took his name.
The new township reached far into land that both Michigan and Ohio claimed during the Toledo War, including most of what is now Sylvania. Its post office opened on June 2, 1835, but on September 19 it moved to Toledo, which was still counted as part of Monroe County. By December 1836 the boundary fight was over and the Toledo Strip went to Ohio, so Whiteford lost all its ground south of the new state line.
- A pole shanty and elm barkTwo Candee brothers arrived ahead of their family in the spring of 1834 with a wagon. They bought land still called the Candee Place and built a pole shanty fourteen feet square, roofed with elm bark and left open at one corner for smoke. The family reached Toledo on September 18 and stayed overnight at General White's. By morning the mother had died of cholera morbus, and she was buried a few rods from the shanty.
- Farmers and a stave millIn the decades after settlement, Whiteford's square-mile sections were split into farms of 40 to 160 acres. In 1880 the township had 2,044 people, and more than 95% of its householders worked as farmers or farm laborers. Merchants and makers did business in Whiteford Center and Ottawa Lake, where a large stave mill gave local people jobs through the 1870s and 1880s.
- 496 pupils in 1888Five road districts were laid out on April 12, 1834, and the school inspectors first divided the township into school districts on April 7, 1838. By the school year ending September 3, 1888, 496 children were attending. They filled six frame schoolhouses and three brick ones, valued together at $5,550, with seats for 539.
- Whiteford Center's first storeWhiteford Center, in the east-central part of the township, was settled as early as 1840. Its first store opened in 1866, and a post office opened there on June 26, 1867, then closed on September 30, 1905. Nearby Gert got a post office on February 16, 1885, and lost it on March 31, 1904, and Saint Anthony was settled in 1920 between Ottawa Lake and Temperance.
