About Whiteman AFB, Missouri

Whiteman AFB is a community of 2,896 people in Johnson County, Missouri, and it grew up around the air base of the same name. The base started during World War II as a training field, and it carried the name of nearby Sedalia until 1955, when the Air Force renamed it for a Sedalia airman killed at Pearl Harbor.

  • Glider training from 1942The base opened as Sedalia Glider Base, activated on Aug. 6, 1942. During the war its field was used to teach glider tactics and to train paratroopers.
  • Renamed on Dec. 3, 1955Sedalia AFB took the name Whiteman AFB to honor 2nd Lt. George A. Whiteman, who was born in Sedalia. He died when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on Dec. 7, 1941, and he was among the first American airmen to lose their lives in the war.
