About Whitharral, Texas

Whitharral is an unincorporated community of 119 people in Hockley County, ten miles north of Levelland on U.S. Highway 385. Locals say its name as WHIT-hair-ul. The town began in 1924, when the Littlefield ranchlands were broken up and sold as farms. It was named for Dr. John Whitfield Harral, an early settler who served as a trustee for the Yellow House Land Company, the firm that sold the ranch to farmers.

The new farm town grew quickly. A school opened in 1925, the same year Lee Crownover started a store. Within about a year Whitharral also had a post office, a cotton gin, a garage and three churches.

  • Two tornadoesA tornado struck Whitharral on Easter Sunday of 1957 and damaged some homes. A far worse one came late in the evening on April 17, 1970. That violent storm tore through parts of town and flattened the school gym only minutes after the fans and players had walked out.
  • Six-man football championsThe Whitharral High School football team has reached the UIL six-man state championship game three times. It came home with the title twice, in 1981 and again in 2001.
  • Lady Panthers win stateWhitharral's girls basketball team, the Lady Panthers, won the Class 1A Division II state championship on March 2, 2013. They took the title by beating Saltillo of Hopkins County.
