About Whitley City, Kentucky

Choosing a county seat for the new McCreary County set off a long, hard fight. In November 1913 the Hopkinsville Kentuckian reported the result. Whitley City had won the contest by a small but decisive majority.

Whitley City sits 1,322 feet above sea level, among the highest county seats in Kentucky. Before McCreary County was formed in 1912, the area was one of the most isolated in the state. After US 27 was built, the town grew fast. It gained modern schools, churches and a new fireproof brick courthouse.
