About Wichita Falls, Texas
Wichita Falls is a city and the county seat of Wichita County, with 102,316 residents counted in 2020. Its townsite was laid out beside the Wichita River in 1876, near a small waterfall later lost to flooding. Rail service arrived in 1882 and spurred town-lot sales and early growth.
- Early SettlementTom Buntin's family hauled buffalo hides here from the 1860s, while John Converse settled in 1875 and opened the first store.
- Permanent PioneersThe Barwise family, regarded as the first permanent settlers, visited in 1878 and returned to stay the following year.
- Railroad ArrivalThe first train arrived on September 27, 1882, setting off a boom in town-lot sales.
- Falls RecreatedAfter the original waterfall was destroyed in 1886, the city built a 54-foot artificial waterfall beside the river in Lucy Park in 1987.
- Cycling TraditionThe annual Hotter'N Hell Hundred began during the city's 1982 centennial and is described as the nation's largest single-day century bicycle ride.
