This vintage linen postcard invites you to Wieland's Tortuga, a restaurant and cocktail bar that once welcomed travelers "1 mile east of square on U. S. Rt. 40" in Hagerstown, Maryland. The mention of Route 40 is a fitting one: this is the historic National Road, America's first federally funded highway, which threaded through Hagerstown and carried generations of westbound travelers , many of whom would have welcomed a good meal and a cocktail along the way.
From roughly the 1930s through the 1940s, American "linen" postcards reached their golden age, prized for their textured finish and vivid, saturated colors. This card was published by Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose work is preserved today in the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection. This edition has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL, bringing back the warmth and detail of the original.
