About Willcox, Arizona
Willcox, a city of 3,213 people, lies in the Sulphur Springs Valley of northern Cochise County. It began in 1880 under the name Maley, as a whistlestop along the Southern Pacific Railroad, and the railroad chose the spot because it sat roughly midway between El Paso and Phoenix. During the Apache Wars the station became a key supply point for the Army, and it also shipped cattle and ore from the ranches and mines of southeastern Arizona.
The town was renamed for General Orlando B. Willcox, a Union general in the Civil War who took command of the Department of Arizona in 1878. Residents at first spelled his name with a single L and fixed the spelling in 1889. By the early 20th century, Willcox ranked among the nation's leaders in cattle production.
- A redwood depot from 1880Railroad Avenue was the business center of Willcox and the whole valley from the year the trains arrived. Its Southern Pacific depot, built in 1880, is the last of the railroad's original redwood frame stations still standing in Arizona, and it now houses City Hall. Down the street, the Schley Saloon building of 1893 had become a grocery by the eve of Prohibition, and today it is home to Willcox's Rex Allen Museum and Cowboy Hall of Fame.
- Built to receive Army officersDelso Smith built the Schwertner House on Stewart Street in 1880 as a place to host visiting officers of the Army. In 1893 the house passed to Mr. Schwertner, and it joined the National Register on August 25, 1983.
- The town's first bankPablo Soto had taught school in Tucson in its earliest days before coming to Willcox in the early 1880s to sell goods at the Norton & Stewart store. He and his brother later bought the store, and around 1888 they began taking deposits from anyone who came in, the first banking in Willcox. The Pablo Soto House stands on Stewart Street.
- A clubhouse finished in 1936Through the 1920s the Willcox Women's Club raised money, then donated land to the city so that a clubhouse could be built by the Works Progress Administration. The building was completed in 1936 and is the only Pueblo Revival structure in town. It's also called the Willcox Women's Community Center.
- Rex Allen, The Arizona CowboyFrom 1950 he played himself in 19 Westerns, then starred in Frontier Doctor. Willcox began Rex Allen Days in his honor in 1951, and his ashes were scattered in Railroad Park, near his bronze statue.
