About Williams, Arizona

Williams is a city of 3,202 people in Coconino County, west of Flagstaff, and it is known as the Gateway to the Grand Canyon. The town dates from 1881 and takes its name from William Sherley "Old Bill" Williams, a trapper and mountain man who often worked these hills. The city incorporated on July 9, 1901.

That same year the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe completed a 64-mile branch from Williams to the South Rim. Its first scheduled passenger train made the trip on September 17, 1901, for a fare of $3.95, and the railroad helped build Grand Canyon Village for its riders. Automobiles slowly drew travelers away, and the Santa Fe ran its last passenger train in July 1968 with just three people aboard. In 1988 Max and Thelma Biegert purchased the line, restored it, and brought it back as the Grand Canyon Railway. Its reopening on September 17, 1989, fell on the anniversary of that first run.

  • Old Bill WilliamsBorn in North Carolina in 1787, Williams lived among the Osage in Missouri, wrote a dictionary of their language and spent years as an interpreter and guide on trips across the West. He died in 1849. The Bill Williams Mountain Men, a local group founded in 1953, also carry his name.
  • Last town bypassed on Route 66Lawsuits held up the final stretch of Interstate 40 in Arizona until settlements required the state to give Williams three exits. The interstate opened around the town on October 13, 1984, the next morning's papers announced that US 66 had essentially ended, and the old highway was decommissioned a year later. Urban Route 66, Williams joined the National Register in 1989.
  • Train robbers every summerOn summer nights the Cataract Creek Gang stages an Old West gunfight in the streets, and the same cast holds up the Grand Canyon Railway train as it comes back from the canyon. In winter, riders board The Polar Express in Williams and ride to a North Pole stop north of town.
  • Bill Williams MountainThe lava dome directly south of the city rises to 9,256 feet and bears the old trapper's name, like the town below it.
